President of the School of Science & Engineering

Have you ever envisioned yourself as someone who can make a real difference in your school and for your peers? The role of School President in the School of Science & Engineering (SSEN) is a unique opportunity to step into such a leadership position, where your voice not only matters but leads the way for change.

The position is filled with diverse experiences, opportunities to engage with faculty and students, and the chance to advocate for the betterment of the academic and social environment. It’s a role that places you at the highest student level within our school, where your initiatives can significantly improve student life. Despite the challenges and resistance, you might face, the ability to argue your point and convince others of the benefits of your side is both exciting and rewarding. It reveals a wonderful opportunity to improve not just the school but also, you’re debating or public speaking skills. Understanding the workings of a large organization like a university adds a valuable layer to your educational experience.

A typical day for the school President is dynamic, involving meetings that represent all students at your school, where your input is valued and respected. Collaborating with faculty, staff, and students through various committees, such as the Student Staff Liaison Committee, allows for the exchange of ideas and addressing of concerns directly affecting the student body. This collaborative effort ensures that the student’s voice is heard and acted upon, guiding the school in a direction aligned with student needs.

Currently, I am working on an initiative that establishes recreational social rooms for students—a place designed by students for leisure time in between lectures and community events. This initiative not only addresses the need for more social spaces but also fosters a sense of community and unity among students. It further creates an identity as a school.

Balancing academic commitments with the responsibilities of being School President is indeed challenging, but it’s all about time management and delegation. It’s okay to say no when things get overwhelming, and sharing responsibilities with vice presidents can help manage the workload efficiently.

For those considering the role of the SSEN President, remember that this role is pivotal in representing the student voice. It’s an opportunity to make a lasting impact and foster an environment where every student feels included, heard, and supported.

Lead with conviction and advocate for improvements that benefit the entire school community. Your leadership can inspire and create a more enriching academic and social environment for all students. Seize the opportunity to be the next President of the School of Science & Engineering and unlock your potential to make a difference. We need you!
