DUSA Exec statement on Supreme Court ruling and support for trans students
We are disappointed by the Supreme Court’s ruling that “the terms woman and sex in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex.”
Dundee currently has the highest recordings of domestic abuse in the whole of Scotland (177 per 10,000 population), with a significant majority of victim-survivors throughout Scotland being women. Awareness, education, support and accountability are crucial if we are to make the changes so desperately needed for Dundee to be a safer city for everybody. No form of abuse or harm is okay, and nobody deserves to live in fear.
On 28 November, the DUSA staff attended Reclaim the Night march to fight against gender-based violence. The march started from Campus Green, near the DUSA building heading towards Magdalen Green, at the bandstand, there was a massive crowd bringing out their loud voices, and passion to show support against the domestic abuse and violence against women. Many activists and social change makers raised their voices and shared their views about how the Global 16 Days Campaign can be a torchbearer to challenge violence against women and girls. The march ended at the V&A.
To keep up with the momentum, DUSA staff joined hands with the Dundee Women’s Aid to show support against gender-based violence. The UN-led “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” was started by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and continues to be coordinated each year by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership. It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
Dundee Women’s Aid are currently hosting a travelling banner event across Dundee to symbolise unity, collaboration and a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of gender-based violence. The banner has been a collaborative effort with handprints provided by survivors, both women and children, of domestic abuse. We are joining hands and working towards a Dundee free of Gender-Based Violence and fear.
