DUSA Exec statement on Supreme Court ruling and support for trans students
We are disappointed by the Supreme Court’s ruling that “the terms woman and sex in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex.”
Beginning a University course can be thrilling as well as unsettling for many students who have been out of the educational system for some time. It can require a lot of change, such as readjusting to a new academic environment and lifestyle, meeting new people, assuming new duties, and getting acclimated to new settings and methods of doing things.
The UDSB Student Community and DUSA Executives conduct an informal event for any new and old mature students or parent students from time to time. The aim of the afternoon tea session is to initiate a casual discussion where students can share their personal educational and life experiences as well as discuss shared worries and aspirations related to attending the University of Dundee with the Advice Team and a mature student representative.
This also helps to get connected with like-minded students and share your concerns and feedback with the DUSA advice and support team.
Very recently the Executives and student representatives conducted two events:
1st Event: Mature Students Afternoon Tea
Date: 8th November
About: This was an informal event for new and old mature students. A casual discussion with the DUSA Advice team, mature student representative and student Exec where students shared their personal educational and life experiences as well as discussed shared worries and aspirations related to attending the University of Dundee.
Result: From the feedback obtained during the meeting, we identified that academic and career support with more relevant fun group meetings will be the focus of our strategic developments next year.
Future plans: Developing strategies to support and improve mature students’ involvement and engagement on campus
2nd Event: Parent Student Afternoon
Date: 30th November
About: This event provided an opportunity for University of Dundee students who are parents and carers of children to have an informal chat with the DUSA Advice team and Student Executive members, to build a supportive community that enhances parent students’ experience.
Result: Future day events will be held to encourage parents to attend with their children and provide necessary support around careers, academics, and community.
Plans: Ensuring Parents and carers of children are not socially alienated as students through creating more family-friendly events and ensuring that communication is clear about which events are family-friendly or not.
About the Exec: Obiozor Okoro is dedicated, approachable, and friendly and can democratically work alongside students and university staff while staying focused on achieving set objectives. You can reach out to her at her email: vpr@dusa.co.uk
