Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, is the grandest festival in China, with a 7-day long celebration.
Like Christmas in Western countries, Chinese New Year is a time to be home with family, chatting, drinking, cooking, and enjoying a hearty meal together. The University of Dundee has many students coming from China and neighbouring countries like Malaysia, Hongkong and Singapore. Our DUSA executives and societies organised a Spring Festival event at Bonar Hall last Friday 27 January 2023 and had a grand celebration.
Our DUSA Vice President Of Student Activities – Zinning Li, is responsible for organising the student events and assisting student societies to build and develop. Zinning oversees the management of over 160 societies at DUSA and supports students to find new opportunities to develop their interests, talents and skills outside of their academic studies.
He was the project leader for the Spring Festival Event with the cooperation of the Singaporean Society, Hong Kong Society, Malaysian Society and Chinese Society. With 3-month preparation, every society did a great contribution to this event and made Spring Festival Event became a stunning platform to illustrate their fabulous culture and strengthen bonds, and this event attracted over 300 students to come and performers from multiple backgrounds.
An excerpt from the speech of Zining Li, DUSA Vice-President of Student Activities on the day of the event-
“This Dundee University Community is all about happiness, acceptance and unification – This is what Spring Festival is for. I sincerely hope you enjoy this evening, make new friends, new memories, and of course, new beginnings. I am very pleased to host this very special event DUSA Spring Festival – A celebration of new beginnings in 2023. This is an event for all of us, no matter where are you from. I sincerely wish that I can organise more events to provide a better platform for students to illustrate themselves in the future.”
