University of Dundee students raise over £13,500 for Islamic Relief work in Gaza

An evening of spiritual reflection and unity

4 April 2024

Dundee University Islamic Society in collaboration with DUSA, Islamic Relief Scotland, DUMAS and AIS organised an evening of iftar with Qari Essa Al Enizy on Thursday 21st March at Bonar Hall.

It was a night of spiritual reflection and standing for an important cause – fundraising for Gaza. What better way to do it than in the holy month of Ramadan, where students, DUSA Vice President of Academia  – Mubarak Babalola, DUSA Advice & Support team and a few eminent speakers joined together for a night of spiritual reflections followed by a delicious iftaar (the meal at the end of a day’s fasting) and fundraising in aid of the Islamic Relief’s Gaza appeal.

The attendees gathered together for a purpose beyond relishing the delicious iftaar – to show support and extend a compassionate hand towards Gaza.  The event included recitations from the Quran and reflections from Qari Essa Alenizy, the esteemed former imam of the Grand Mosque of Kuwait. His words resonated deeply with attendees echoing the essence of empathy.

Students and community members alike came together, bound by a shared commitment and through collective effort the students were able to raise £13,500 in support of Islamic Relief’s Gaza appeal, offering a ray of hope amidst adversity.

The evening embodied the essence of humanity, compassion and solidarity. Each contribution made a difference and helped to contribute to a larger narrative of hope and unity.

‘’It was a fantastic event with over 200 students in attendance, at the Bonar Hall. Seeing students unite for a social cause is always heart-warming and exemplifies what Dundee University, the city, and DUSA stand for.  The money raised will directly provide free meals for children displaced in the crisis.  A heartfelt thank you to all societies that collaborated on the event, as well as everyone who attended. I look forward to more events and collaborations with student societies in the future.‘’ – Mubarak Babalola, DUSA Vice President of Academia
