DUSA Exec statement on Supreme Court ruling and support for trans students
We are disappointed by the Supreme Court’s ruling that “the terms woman and sex in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex.”
DUSA are committed to creating an environment in which all staff, volunteers and members are supported to continuously develop their talents, skills, and knowledge. DUSA staff and executives work constantly to enhance the student experience and come out with a solution to help students in their best capacity.
Let me give you a vicarious tour of the DUSA through my blog post. You can reach out to DUSA when you need any kind of support and here are a few areas wherein DUSA staff and executives can help you and guide you in right direction:
1.) DUSA Housing
There is a dedicated Facebook Page – DUSA Housing which was created to give University of Dundee students a place where they could look for or advertise a room to rent. This page is run and managed by DUSA for University of Dundee students. Only University of Dundee students or prospective students can place an advert here and find a place for themselves.
2.) Mental Health and Well-Being
Have you heard about the famous dog therapy, a part of Wellbeing Wednesday DUSA conducts? You can visit our Instagram page and watch a few reels we captured in our previous dog therapy sessions, they are so relaxing and so much fun when you bring your friends along with you. You can visit the Health & Wellbeing page at the DUSA website which is full of resources to help you in a health crisis and to keep you well during your time in Dundee and beyond.
3.) Cost-of-Living Support
The ongoing cost of living crisis not only impacts our finances and daily decisions but also has an effect on our mental well-being, which should not go ignored. DUSA, with the University, has introduced two major initiatives to help the students and stand by their side.
DUSA host a breakfast club free of charge within Air Bar between 08:30 and 10:30 Monday to Friday. Students from this University will have the option between a hot or cold breakfast and will be offered tea or coffee. Students will be able to enjoy a tasty breakfast in a comfortable and friendly environment before they head off to classes, work or back home.
DUSA run a Free Campus Pantry that will supply a variety of basic essentials and toiletries aimed at lowering the cost of a student’s weekly shop. The Pantry includes items such as bread and margarine, non-perishable items such as pasta, noodles or canned products and toiletries such as shower gel and toothpaste.
4.) Work Opportunities
The best thing I have realised while working at DUSA is that it gives equal opportunity to everyone. The work culture here is inclusive and diverse. DUSA has created a lot of work opportunities for students and that’s how I got this job. You can also keep an eye on their Work For Us page and apply for suitable openings. DUSA is a Real Living Wage employer certified by the Living Wage Foundation.
5.) Volunteering Opportunities
If you are a student who want to volunteer and gain some experience, you can contact register here. You can also volunteer for the Free Breakfast Club and get in touch with us at The Hive.
6.) Advice and Support
DUSA has dedicated a team to help you. They provide confidential and impartial service to the students, which is independent of the University of Dundee. This means that we can support our students with anything, academic appeals, private housing, complaints about the university etc. It is indeed tough to manage day-to-day living along with academics, managing time and your overall quality of life. Hence the DUSA Advice and Support team thrive to offer the best advice and help you by directing you towards the right resources.
