DUSA Exec statement on Supreme Court ruling and support for trans students
We are disappointed by the Supreme Court’s ruling that “the terms woman and sex in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex.”
On 15 November, we at DUSA celebrated the grand opening of ‘The Liar’ in the presence of Rector Keith Harris, Principal and Vice-Chancellor at the University of Dundee, Iain Gillespie and DUSA President Nyasha Mutembwa.
At the heart of the refurbishment is the recommendations from a group of 4th year Marketing Students ‘Student Journeys study’ which was conducted in early 2020 by Rabeeah Ahmed, Lee-Anne Menzies, Ruairidh Murphy, Lily Porter and Emma Quested. The study found that around 21% of students surveyed were food fanatics and recommended that the University should invest in DUSA to improve facilities aesthetically and improve product range. This has been a key focus of discussion at Board level and with £300,000 investment from University of Dundee we have been able to take forward this recommendation and are already seeing a positive impact. The Liar has been transformed into a more modern, multi-purpose space with capacity increased to around 240 people seated and is quickly proving to be the most popular eatery in the building.
Cheryl-Ann Cruickshank, CEO of DUSA said:
“It is great to be able to take forward the recommendations from the Student Journeys study and invest in and improve the facilities for students. This is all part of our vision of creating a kinder, greener, diverse global student community. We now have a fantastic space for staff, students and visitors to come together, socialise and eat great food.”
President Nyasha Mutembwa stated:
“The best thing about the refurb is how much space it allows for people to sit in here because it allows us to build a community that we have always dreamt of. This space encourages people to make friends.”
Keith Harris stated:
“The University is about students and the student experience. The funding the University has put in, feels to me as rector, that things are moving in the right direction. The University has not lost sight that they are here to help provide a first-class student experience.
Of course, people want to get an education but the social learning is important and those two factors work hand in hand. That is what this refurb is symbolic of.”
Iain Gillespie when asked on why it is important for the University to help fund projects such as The Liar refurb:
“Dundee University has a strong student community and the Students’ Association has been a hub and the heartbeat of that community.
I have been working with Cheryl-Ann to ensure that DUSA continues to excel and bring students together.
The Liar was a bit tired and it was becoming less welcoming. The new design has created a more welcoming space.”
The Liar is a part of DUSA. It is located at level 3 of the DUSA building – serving a variety of refreshments, beverages, delicious food, and irresistible sweet treats. The doors are opened with new decor and style to suit the students who want to simply sit back with a cup of coffee and have wee chat with friends. Every place has an interesting story tell and so has ‘The Liar’. It was named after the British Novel ‘The Liar’, by Stephen Fry. He was elected Rector of the University in 1992.
With a warm and inviting atmosphere, ‘The Liar’ is a great place to catch up with friends or just to have some ‘me time’.
We would like to thank our whole team who have worked hard for this day.
