Black History Month Celebration at a Glance

A Review of Events During BHM October At DUSA

1 November 2022

Black History Month is celebrated in the month of October to highlight the achievements of the Black community. We at DUSA took this as an opportunity to ignite conversations and help people feel included. Get educated and honour their efforts, celebrating their contributions throughout the month. We organised different kinds of events from 1st October to 31st October, remembering important people and their contributions to society.

Our vision is to create a kinder, greener, diverse global student community. We firmly believe that such kind of events help in creating lasting impact for generations to come, as the University and DUSA wholeheartedly welcomes many students from all over the world.

Black History is very close to my heart, growing up mixed race gave me an insight into racism that I cannot unsee. Every month is black history month to me. I genuinely believe that as a human race we are capable of creating a more equitable society that celebrates and respects our differences. One in which black people’s contribution is recognised and celebrated, every day.

Aim of Black History Month Celebration at DUSA

DUSA has zero tolerance for any kind of harassment, bullying, racism or discrimination. We serve as a third-party reporting centre for hate crimes, so anyone can come to us with complaints, and we’ll file reports on their behalf. There is no place for racism in our community. We want all new and returning students to feel safe and welcomed. We believe that everyone has something unique to offer, we embrace difference and actively include minority and underrepresented groups in everything we do.

Black History to me is something that I didn’t really have growing up through school, until I came to university actually. Being black to me was something I only learnt to love when I was able to surround myself with close people just like me, who really understand me. Being a Black Woman is an intersectionality in itself and being in a space like engineering where there are too few of us, I use occasions like Black History Month to maximise my empowerment and truly be unapologetically black and excellent in all I do. An environment like DUSA is such a globally diverse community that it’s only right to celebrate all the excellence that every culture brings.
