President’s Statement on University of Dundee Unite Strike Action

25 August 2022

Dear fellow students,

Many of you will already be aware that University of Dundee staff who are members of Unite the Union will be on continuous strike from the 25th August. This is due to a dispute relating to the University of Dundee Superannuation and Life Assurance Pension Scheme (UoDSS).

These staff members are invaluable to our learning and general university experience. The staff affected are essential employees and are the bedrock of our institution. Their work allows campus life to function and without them, the University becomes disrupted.

The impact of ongoing and chronic strike action will have an impact on our students’ wellbeing as vital staff withdraw their labour. It is deeply worrying that Unite feel they have no other choice but to strike over their pensions and the lack of security surrounding them. This is not only damaging to our institutional reputation and the livelihoods of our staff, but this situation also compromises the interests of our student community.

Accordingly, we urge the University of Dundee to continue exploring options until both parties agree on a viable solution. This students’ association will no longer allow students to be disrupted by conflicts within the University. As your leaders of a kinder, greener, more diverse global student community, we champion for the very best student experience for all. That is why we condemn the impact these strikes are having on the education and wellbeing of our students.

Yours,

Nyasha Mutembwa, President
